Post Match Thoughts – Game 10 – New York Red Bulls 2, NYCFC 1

PATH

New York 2, New York 1

It was a great night in Harrison and the better team won. The first Hudson River Derby (that name still doesn’t feel right) ended 2-1 to Red Bulls, who seized upon opportunities afforded them in a sloppy game from NYCFC. City’s defensive work on Sunday night was easily the worst so far in a season full of lousy performances. Strip away context and this was simply a good Major League Soccer team beating a bad one. But it’s impossible to ignore the real story here, Red Bulls striking first blood in what’s obviously going to become a huge rivalry.  The win likely provided their supporters with equal parts jubilation and relief. Post-Match Thoughts – Game 9 – Seattle Sounders FC 3, NYCFC 1

Pike's Market

SEATTLE 3, NEW YORK 1

I guess that’s what a top team looks like. New York City FC welcomed Supporter’s Shield and US Open Cup holders Seattle Sounders FC to Yankee Stadium Sunday in a game that clearly outlined the hierarchy of MLS. Clint Dempsey and Obafemi Martins put on a show, combining for three goals in a winning effort. We knew there was a major difference in quality going into the game and at the very least it provided New York with a reference point – now they know how far it is to the summit. [Read more…]

Post-Match Thoughts – Game 2 – NYCFC 2, New England Revolution 0

Empire State Orange

NEW YORK 2, NEW ENGLAND 0

It was a night of firsts as New York City FC hosted the defending Eastern Conference Champions.  The first game at Yankee Stadium – a venue that will be the club’s home for at least one season – and also New York’s first-ever win.  Over 43,000 showed up and the hosts provided the requisite fireworks.  Here’s what caught my attention. A Brief History of Home Openers in MLS and New York City

Be Alert

With New York City FC opening its temporary home this weekend, I thought it’d be nice to take a look back at how these things have gone in the past. Two groups seemed appropriate to focus on – prior MLS Expansion teams, and other New York Metro area sports franchises.

In compiling this information I was hoping to find some sort of trend. Maybe a surge of emotion propels the home team to victory far more often than would otherwise be expected. Or perhaps the opposite is true – the pressure of the moment is overwhelming and the hosts are normally doomed. At the very least the setting should produce memorable moments – comebacks, dramatic winners, games that can be explained in a sentence and become part of team lore – right? [Read more…]

Who Are These Guys? NYCFC 2015 Roster – Midfield

New York City FC’s midfield is the deepest unit on the roster and also the most experienced.  It’s also the group that’s gotten the most attention in recent months, with Frank Lampard and Mix Diskerud dominating headlines and discussion boards.  This is the engine that will drive NYCFC in 2015.  There’s a lot to cover so let’s get started. Lampard isn’t Worth the Hassle for NYCFC or MLS

By now anyone who follows MLS or the Premier League knows that Frank Lampard’s loan to Manchester City has been extended. The signature signing for NYCFC, Lampard was originally scheduled to return to the club in January after spending the first half of the English season with Manchester City. He was loaned to stay sharp and provide Man City with some midfield depth and, as outlined here and elsewhere ad nauseam, he’s exceeded expectations in that role. City has had a string of injuries to its front line players, and manager Manuel Pellegrini has insisted that they retain Lampard through the end of the season so they have sufficient resources to pursue silverware on multiple fronts.

It’s an unfortunate situation for the club and the league because speculation about Lampard’s future has become the story in recent weeks. It’s easily the highest profile story associated with the league right now, a quick glance at any MLS-related news site or forum will confirm that. And simply put, Frank Lampard isn’t worth the attention. [Read more…]
